A server cluster gives a client the ability to allocate resources to their application or website as necessary. This flexibility allows greater ease of resource allocation and more control over how those resources are used.

It also allows for easier horizontal scaling. If a burst of traffic is anticipated, it’s relatively easy to add a new server to the web front end when the cluster topology is already in place, as opposed to starting from scratch.

A cluster is a purpose-built system of servers functioning modularly toward a common goal.

In many situations, site or application hosting can be reasonably handled by a single server. This one server will house and maintain many services running in tandem. Services like a web service, a DNS service, a database service, and a backup service can all be responsibly handled on a single machine. Many services can share the resources of one device.

As an application or site grows beyond the capacity of a single server, it’s often necessary to isolate some of those services to their own server. In a case like this, specific servers are dedicated to database processes or web server processes. At this point, when many servers are functioning toward the same goal, the group is called a cluster.

A host cluster is a set of servers with an aim of web hosting. There are many types of cluster configurations, but the most common is a dedicated database server paired with one or many web servers, which handle serving websites.

A cloud cluster is a cluster of servers hosted in the cloud. This approach allows clients to take advantage of the technology and flexibility of cloud hosting, including being able to spin up/down new servers or resize servers, moving them in and out of the cluster as business needs dictate. Server clusters should be custom-designed for the specific use-case, but the most common are:

Web clusters: often a web server front-end and a database server back-end.
Application clusters: usually a web server front-end with database servers and application processing servers working in tandem in the back-end
Secure clusters: usually web server or application server designs with a firewall and VPN. The hardware firewall segregates traffic between all the servers and the cluster requires a secure VPN connection prior to access to sensitive data.
